This morning I talked with Angel Ellis, my former cohost at Pretendians, and director of Mvskoke Media - the news agency of the Mvskoke (Creek) Nation in Oklahoma. Angel is a free speech advocate and journalist, who was featured in the documentary ‘Bad Press’, a film about the fight for free speech on her rez.
As it happened, she was in Finland, doing press for the film at the invitation of the US Embassy when Trump took control. And that meant she was one of the people who was cut off from funds - in the middle of the Arctic Circle.
During the call we talk about that, and talk about how Trump’s cuts are hitting Indian Country. I wanted to talk about the annexation talk — but was surprised to find that it hadn’t made any impression down there, other than a few memes.
Lastly, we hit on a few things that the liberal resistance should consider appropriating from Natives.
